Inspiration is enough to give expression to the tone in singing, especially when the song is without words.

Happy 200th birthday to Mr. Liszt.

October 9, 1835: French composer Camille Saint-Saëns is born in Paris.

Saint-Saëns was a composer of the Romantic period. Though his name is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries’, many of his compositions are popular and still widely performed- including his suite Les carnaval des animaux (The Carnival of the Animals, a series of fourteen animal-themed orchestral movements), his Symphony no. 3 in C Minor, and, of course, Danse macabre, which was controversial at its debuted and thought of as “disturbing” by early audiences.

His musical style, though often restrained and conservative, could at times be innovative and even exotic. Saint-Saëns was also a talented piano and organ virtuoso- at age two, his parents discovered that he was pitch perfect, and at four, he composed his first piece for the piano.
