December 18, 1888: Richard Wetherill and Charles Mason discover Cliff Palace.

Cliff Palace, located in what is now Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, was a cliff dwelling built by the Anasazi people (modern-day Pueblos may prefer the more PC term “ancestral Pueblo peoples”.). Dating back to the twelfth-to-thirteenth centuries AD, Cliff Palace is the largest known cliff dwelling in North America. It contains hundreds of rooms and dozens of kivas, circular underground structures used for religious and ceremonial purposes. Construction on the structure lasted for nearly a century until its occupants eventually migrated south into present-day New Mexico and Arizona, leaving the dwelling uninhabited by 1300. The dwellings themselves were constructed from sandstone, mortar, and wooden beams. They sit at an elevation of over 2000 meters, in a twenty-meter deep alcove carved into the side of Cliff Canyon itself.

The discoverers of Cliff Palace were two cowboys who had spotted the structures from the top of a mesa. One of them, Richard Wetherill, who would later return with a small army of excavators (mostly his family and neighbors), gave the dwelling its name. The Palace was later explored by other amateurs who, along with Wetherill, did considerable damage to the ruins and made off with most of the artifacts. Luckily, Mesa Verde National Park was formed in 1906 in order to preserve Cliff Palace and the hundreds of other similar cliff dwellings in the area.
